Show Notes

Neurodivergent children and their caregivers face a unique set of challenges in ensuring that they have access to appropriate services supporting dental and oral health. Unfortunately, due to some of these challenges, many children grow up without appropriate supports, and experience long-term negative physical and mental health repercussions. Barry and Dave do a deep dive into these issues with Dr. Rose-Marie Daly, who has a high level of expertise and experience in working with neurodivergent children and supporting their caregivers, and who understands how critical dental and oral health is for each child and the family.

  1. Rose-Marie discusses the vital importance of dental and oral health services for neurodivergent children in supporting overall physical health as well as social and emotional well-being. What points resonated with you the most? What are some of the barriers and challenges that caregivers’ face in acquiring effective dental services?

  1. How do Rose-Marie and her team work to reduce stress and anxiety for children and their caregivers? How does this progress from initial contact with a family through implementation of dental procedures? Based on this discussion, do you feel current services that you have experienced, or that you know others have experienced provide such support? Specifically, what kinds of changes do you think would be helpful for your family, or for others that you know?

  1. Rose-Marie discusses two distinct, but necessary dimensions of effective practice for neurodivergent children and families. The first is the technical skill required, and the second is the interpersonal relationships with a child and caregivers in developing a long-term trusting relationship. Why are both dimensions essential when addressing oral health and dental support for neurodivergent children? Have you experienced situations in which there was an imbalance between these two dimensions, and how did that make you feel? In contrast, have you experienced a supportive integration of these two dimensions for your child, or for you personally, and how did that make you feel?
