EPISODE 15
“Trust Must Be Earned”: Parent-Professional Relationships

Play the Episode…

…and Continue the Discussion

Do you have a book or podcast club? If so, you may use this discussion guide to facilitate a conversation about this episode.

1) Barry and Dave discussed the fact that “trust must be earned”, and that it is a two way street. What does that mean to you, and what actions are helpful in earning trust. If you are a professional, consider this issue from your perspective, and if you are a parent, from your perspective.

2) Barry shares many lessons he has learned from what parents what and need from professionals. Identify two of these lessons that were particularly striking to you from the discussion or from your own experiences. In practice, how can you ensure you are addressing these needs, from a professional or parent perspective.

3) What are some of the ways that professionals’ interactions with, or discussions about children or adults on the spectrum can build or inhibit the development of trust with parents or family members? Discuss times in your personal experience that you engaged in trust building behavior, and conversely, actions you took that you would change because in retrospect, they made you less trustworthy.

Show Notes

In the complex process of developing relationships, things can go so right in some situations and so wrong in others—right, when time spent together engenders trust and builds positive and collaborative relationships; wrong, when encounters create mistrust, suspicion, and even anger (typically for the parents, but sometimes for professionals as well). Autism is a passionate affair for all involved, and in this episode, Barry and Dave discuss some of the challenges as well as solutions for building trusting parent-professional relationships.
